UW-Green Bay hosts community Kwanzaa event, Saturday, Dec. 9

GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host a Kwanzaa Celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 in the Phoenix Rooms of the University Union.

Students, staff, faculty and community are invited to learn about the cultural holiday while enjoying festive music and dancing from the Nefertari Dance Company, a dynamic group involving community participants from age 3 to 18.

The keynote speaker for this year’s event is Ajamou Butler from Milwaukee, Wis., who will share his story of faith and Heal the Hood MKE, an organization that aims to bring peace throughout the city of Milwaukee.

Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration based on the tradition of the African harvest festival emphasizing community and cultural pride. Attendees can learn about the holiday’s origins, rites and symbols while enjoying the many other things the event has to offer. This year’s highlighted Kwanzaa principle, or theme, is Imani, which means faith.

Sponsored by the Black Student Union, American Intercultural Center, Office of Student Life, Division of Student Affairs and Campus Climate and the Diversity Taskforce, the event is free and open to the public. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided while supplies last.
