UW-Green Bay chosen as host institution for inaugural Wisconsin Civics Games

UW-Green Bay has been chosen as a host institution for the inaugural Wisconsin Civics Games. Student knowledge of civics and how American government works is woefully in decline, according to UW-Green Bay History Chair Heidi Sherman, and beginning in 2017, all Wisconsin high school students are now mandated by law to pass the same civics test required for the U.S. citizenship exam. To help students prepare, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, League of Women Voters, and others, are organizing a statewide competition starting this fall for high schools. Teams will review their civics knowledge this fall and compete at regional competitions throughout the state on February 2, 2019, after which the winners will advance to the state competition in Madison.

UW-Green Bay has been chosen as the regional host for Northeast Wisconsin. This fall, UW-Green Bay History and Political Science students will prepare the questions that will be used for all seven regional competitions and test them in social studies education classes. The UW-Green Bay event will be organized by two units: Democracy and Justice Studies (Political Science) and the Humanities (History).
