Close-ups: Art Open House, Chili Bowls for the Hungry and cardboard creations
It’s been a busy few weeks for student artists, starting with the Art Program Open House, April 13. Prospective students, their parents and teachers and our UW System colleagues got a first-hand look at what UW-Green Bay has to offer undergraduates interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art, Arts Management, Design Arts and Art Education.
On April 19, Art Agency held its annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. (For $10, patrons enjoyed lunch donated by several area restaurants, and got to keep the work-of-art ceramic bowls made by faculty ceramist Minkyu Lee and UW-Green Bay art students.) They raised several thousand dollars for Paul’s Pantry.
Finally, see for yourself the impressive (and fun) exhibit by Asst. Prof. of Art and Visual Design Alison Stehlik’s Design Methods class in the Studio Arts cafeteria area.
The “Branding War Machines” in the SA cafeteria were created by students in ART 106 Design Methods. The class analyzed and critiqued contemporary branding strategies for certain products/companies. Part of the discussion — design and advertising that is created for the purpose of prevailing over another competing company or product. In groups of four, students were asked to choose a “brand” to research as source material for a large-scale, three-dimensional cardboard structure. They were expected to consider the social contexts of the product/company, as well as the visual aspects of the logo design. The groups used this research to develop “War Machines” that would destroy their brand’s competition.
