EMBI symposium has students up to their waists in waste

UW-Green Bay’s Environmental Management and Business Institute (EMBI), got dirty with waste issues at this year’s Green Innovations 2011 symposium. The third symposium, held annually during Earth Week, hosted hundreds of campus and community members to discuss waste and wasted opportunities.

An April 20 viewing of the award-winning documentary “Dive,” and post-viewing discussion with the film’s director, Jeremy Siefert, and members of local food pantries and organic food growers was especially popular with UW-Green Bay students. During a lunchon Thursday, Aaron Popkey shared the “green” effort of the Green Bay Packers, and Paul Wozniak, ‘78 and ‘94, was presented the Alumni Earth Caretaker Award. And finally, the “The Original ECO U” T-shirt ($14.95) was unveiled and is on sale now in the Phoenix Bookstore. Designed by alumna Christine Engler, the project was a joint collaboration of the Design Arts major, the Environmental Management Business Institute (EMBI) and the Phoenix Bookstore in celebration of Earth Week.

Among the hands-on activities for students was an exercise in “dumpster diving” — making a waste comparison study from dumpsters collected from student housing, the union, and academic facilities.
