Featured: Katers’ student helps close oily loophole in landfill law

In rotation on UW-Green Bay’s homepage is a feature about the work of student Adam Snippen, who, under the guidance of Prof. John Katers of Natural and Applied Sciences, helped advance a new state law banning used oil filters and absorbent materials from landfill disposal. Snippen calculated the law could prevent nearly a million gallons of used oil getting into Wisconsin landfills, annually. The new law, Assembly Bill 256, goes into effect Dec. 10. While state recycling regulations already prohibited the disposal into landfills of steel, paper and oil, the old law never directly addressed used oil filters. See the full story.
