Faculty note: Jill Collins White
Assistant Prof. Jill Collins White (Human Development, Global Studies) has traveled to New Orleans for the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association. White organized a session this coming Sunday under the broad topic “Centering Youth: Negotiating Intersections, Borders, and Identities.” Participants will offer a comparative analysis of diverse youth coming of age in contexts of families, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, as well as institutional settings. Prof. White will also present a paper, “Intersecting Meanings: Hip Hop, Whiteness and Color-Blind Ideology,” which takes up an examination of what rap music means to white youth, how they may be using it in the construction of their own identities, and whether the music does in fact have the capacity to heal historical rifts between racial groups in the United States.
