Common Theme keynoter Loeb to speak Sept. 30
Paul Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in Challenging Times and The Impossible Will Take a Little While, is the featured speaker for this year’s Common Theme, “The Leadership Question.” Loeb will give a public presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Phoenix Room of the University Union.
Loeb encourages citizens to act on our deepest beliefs and to make a difference despite all of the obstacles we may face. Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity, wrote, “Paul Loeb brings hope for a better world in a time when we so urgently need it.” Loeb’s appearance is sponsored by LAS, Residence Life, Student Life, Student Government Association, and Residence Hall and Apartment Association. Day 2 includes faculty/staff workshop on teaching for engagement
Guest speaker Paul Loeb will meet with faculty and staff from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in the 1965 Room, University Union, to discuss the barriers to community involvement faced by students and how faculty and staff can help them overcome any obstacles. Loeb will examine students’ concepts of social, political and environmental responsibility, what matters in their lives, and how they view themselves in relation to a larger human community. Discussion will focus on what does and doesn’t work in getting students more engaged in critical social justice issues.
