UW-Green Bay Theatre and Dance presents ‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’, May 3
GREEN BAY –University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Theatre and Dance completes its season with a one-night performance of Celeste Respanti’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 3 in the Cofrin Family Hall of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts.
“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is a book and play based on the extant artwork and poetry created by the children of the Terezín concentration camp and is told through the eyes and memories of Raja Englanderova, one of the children who survived Terezín. The title comes from a poem by Pavel Friedman, a young man who was incarcerated at Terezín and later killed at Auschwitz. The play celebrates the children’s ability to live and dream of a human life through their imaginations despite their oppression. “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is an experience that is surprisingly uplifting, and as one reviewer put it – “The memory is a victory of its own.”
The play is directed by Prof. Laura Riddle with scene design by Prof. Jeff Entwistle and costume design by Prof. Kaoime Malloy. Student Matthew Beecher is stage manager. Student Kate Akerboom serves as dramaturg and Jeffery Chesebro is providing advanced technical assistance with projection design. Lighting and sound design as well as technical direction have been completed by Associate Prof. Michael Ingraham.
Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door for adults, $5 in advance and $7 at the door for seniors and non-UW-Green Bay students and $5 for children 12 and under.
