New Arts Enrichment for Adults program offered at UW-Green Bay

Arts Enrichment for Adults, a non-credit program offered at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is aimed at helping adults capture their creative side. An impressive array of class offerings will take place 1-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 26 to 29, on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Dr.

Students can choose one class from the following course options:

From Junk to Jewelry – Transform ordinary cast-off objects into wearable art. Jewelry instructor, Erica Becker will not only introduce students to the basics of jewelry making, she’ll encourage them to create beautiful pieces they can call their own. Students will have fun experimenting with tools and techniques, and will learn the fine art of the craft — sawing, riveting and soldering.

Silk Painting – Sandy Melroy will share the amazing art form of painting on silk in this four-session class for beginning silk painters. Students will “play” with a variety of silk paints and resists, learn how to finish, frame and embellish multiple projects, including a large, framed painting and a silk scarf.

Basic Mosaic Workshop – This creative experience will give students a look into the ancient art form of mosaic. Using a variety of mosaic materials such as ceramic tile, mosaic glass tile, stone and more, each student will design and execute an 8×8-inch mosaic. Basic technique in mosaic design, substrate preparation, materials and adhesives, butting and placement of tiles, grouting and hanging preparation will be covered in this class.

Ceramics: Hand-Building with an Introduction to Wheel-Throwing for Raku Firing – Whether creativity or for relaxation, professional potter and teacher, Dean Hoegger will guide students in the process. Techniques of wheel throwing and hand building will be presented and used to create decorative vessels that will be fired by participants using the raku method. Glaze, fire, and smoke will be used to create unique and dramatic glaze effects.

Anyone Can Draw!!! – Students will learn how to draw using a grid method by artist/educator Sara Tlachac. Students will practice creating a composition, contour drawing and shading to complete a beautiful work of art. Students will “learn to see” through a variety of exercises and have a lot of fun along the way.

Stitchin’ Up a Storm! – Four afternoons filled with fun fabric projects to keep students busy with needle and thread. Choose from the simple to the challenging, depending on your experience. This class covers get-to-know-your-machine, project design and planning, the Great Rotary Cutter, and basic patchwork how-to, plus original “Janna Banana” designs! Instructor: Janna Zimmerman.

Watercolor Painting – Discover and explore the magic and techniques of watercolor with the expectation of taking home a finished painting. Barbara Leo, painter/educator, will guide students with a step-by-step approach to painting rocks, trees, water, flowers, landscapes and buildings.

Acrylic Painting – This course involves studio work investigating methods and techniques related to acrylic paints. Each student will explore standard painting techniques such as masking, wet and dry brush painting, and color mixing. Demonstrations, exercises, individualized guidance and critique will be offered by instructor/artist Frank Juarez.

Introduction to Fine Art Digital Photography – Digital photographer, Tammy Resulta, will introduce you to the workings of your digital camera. Not only will learn about famous photographers like Sally Mann and Tina Barney, through their imagery you will come to view photography as a “fine art.” By doing nature photography and studio work you will explore techniques to improve your sense of composition, creating dramatic imagery that will make you a better, more accomplished photographer.

Digital Photo Editing: Storing and Manipulating Imagery – For students who have taken your photos with a digital camera and now need skills to make working with digital photographs on your computer a joy! Taught by Vicky Molitor, this class is for all skill levels, regardless of computer knowledge. If you want to learn how to efficiently edit your digital photos for printing AND reduce their size to be easily e-mailed, this class is for you. You will practice placing text on photos, then integrating them into documents, preparing them for e-mailing or printing.

Sandra Shackelford is the Arts Enrichment Coordinator for the program. Shackelford is a documentary artist whose work is in collections throughout the U.S. She earned a degree from UW-Green Bay and studied at UW-Milwaukee. Shackelford works with K-12 students at Aldo Leopold School and creates art programs for youth through the Howe Neighborhood Family Resource Center, both in Green Bay.

The class fee of $129 covers instruction. Some classes requiring special materials also have a lab fee.
