Flickr: UW-Green Bay students spend Spring Break learning about Lakota culture

Twelve UW-Green Bay students and a staff member spent their Spring Break visiting southwest South Dakota, where they spent time on the Pine Ridge Reservation and in Rapid City building relationships, learning Lakota culture, and working on service projects.

The group visited Red Cloud School, Oglala Lakota College, the Lakota Fund, Wounded Knee, and much more. They had conversations with Betty O’Rourke, great-granddaughter of Black Elk, and Will Peters, recent recipient of a Native American Music Award (also known as a “Nammy”). The students played with children in an after-school program, built a new porch, and prepared a wall for a large mural.

The trip was organized by the Ecumenical Center and co-sponsored by Student Life. Photos from this high-impact learning experience can be found in the flickr window on the Student Life website.
