Faculty note: Ashmann, Nelson publication

Scott Ashmann, associate professor of Education, and Amanda Nelson, associate professor of Human Biology, recently co-authored an article in The Science Teacher, the National Science Teachers Association journal for high school science teachers. Their article, “Why Do I Crave that Cookie?: Teaching the Integration of Human Body Systems,” describes one set of activities in which students can gain a  better understanding of how human body systems work together on a common task (eating food). Typically, human body systems (e.g., digestive, respiratory, circulatory, etc.) are taught as separate chapters in a high school biology course, with little attention paid to how the systems work together. However, understanding their integration is vital for students to grasp important concepts in human biology.
