UW-Green Bay appoints Mattison dean of College of Professional Studies

Sue Joseph Mattison, an academic administrator and scholar with extensive experience in the areas of health and education, has been appointed dean of the College of Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Julia Wallace announced today the selection of Mattison, who will begin her new duties July 15.
“I am delighted that Dr. Mattison has accepted our offer,” Wallace said. “Her collaborative leadership style and grasp of the many issues affecting higher education today will serve the College of Professional Studies well as it moves forward.”
Mattison is director of the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI).
At UW-Green Bay, she will oversee academic offerings and community services in the areas of business administration, teacher education, nursing and social work, majors that collectively enroll about one-third of the University’s 6,500 students. In addition to internal administrative responsibilities, the position also entails leadership in pursuing collaborative partnerships with business and industry, educational institutions, healthcare providers and human services agencies.
Mattison holds both a bachelor’s (in economics) and a master’s (in health education and cardiac rehabilitation) from UNI. She completed her doctoral studies at the University of Iowa and received a Ph.D. in epidemiology, the study of disease control. She joined the UNI faculty in 1990 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1996 and to full professor in 2001.
Mattison has developed and taught courses in epidemiology, quantitative methods, nutrition in health education, aging, and personal wellness. She has been author or editor of numerous journal articles related to public health, with a focus on case studies involving the diagnosis and treatment of breast and bladder cancers.
In 2000 she received the Iowa Regents’ Award for Faculty Excellence in recognition of research, teaching and service. She was honored by UNI’s College of Education for excellence in research in 2003, and she received the universitywide Distinguished Scholar Award in 2004.
Mattison served three years as division chairperson of UNI’s Division of Health Promotion and Education, and in 2007 began a three-year term as interim dean of the university’s graduate college. In addition, she served in faculty governance leadership roles including back-to-back terms as elected chair of the UNI faculty. UNI is an institution of about 13,000 students located in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
“Faculty, staff, administrators and students here at UW-Green Bay made a huge impression on me,” Mattison said of her interview visit earlier this year. “Everyone has been so warm and welcoming, and made me feel at home. My family and I are very excited to become part of the Green Bay community, and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the University.”
The dean of the College of Professional Studies is one of two academic deans at UW-Green Bay reporting to the provost and vice chancellor. The other is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, a position held by Scott Furlong.
The former dean of professional studies, Fritz Erickson, left UW-Green Bay in July 2009 to become provost of Ferris State University in Michigan. Serving as interim dean since that time has been Prof. Derryl Block of the professional program in nursing.
