Theatre Prof. Riddle, ‘Cabaret’ to take center stage at April 10 After Thoughts
Riddle will present “Cabaret: Berlin to Broadway” on Tuesday, April 10, providing an exciting prelude to the biggest UW-Green Bay Theatre event in more than a decade. Joining forces with UW-Green Bay Music and working with talented returning alumni, Theatre will present the popular musical Cabaret April 20-21. It will be the first time since 2000 that Theatre has staged a production on the mainstage of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts — and as the play’s director, Riddle is at the heart of the event.
The After Thoughts audience will be afforded a unique glimpse into Cabaret, a production that has a history spanning eight decades and two continents. Riddle will offer a historical look at the fan-favorite musical, along with insights and observations from her directorial experience.
“This ground-breaking musical begins in the decadent cabaret world of the Weimar Republic in 1930s Berlin, with all its political overtones and socially relevant themes,” Riddle said. “Cabaret presents an incredibly rich backdrop for dialogue and discussion of the political and social issues of the day — and how we might view them in a 21st century context.”
Riddle’s After Thoughts address will be the fourth and final of 2011-12, the first full academic year of programming after the series debuted with two pilot sessions in spring 2011. Designed to connect women in the community with UW-Green Bay, After Thoughts gatherings showcase faculty, staff and guests, and convene women after their workdays for learning, enrichment and fun. The sessions provide “After Thoughts” for participants to take with them when they leave. As a bonus for this After Thoughts event, the Weidner Center Box Office will be open from 4:30-7:30 p.m. April 10, so After Thoughts attendees can purchase Cabaret tickets on site.
“I can’t think of a better way to conclude our first full year of After Thoughts than with this compelling address from Laura Riddle,” said Beverly Carmichael, assistant chancellor for University Advancement. “We have had such a dynamic lineup of smart, engaging female speakers, and Riddle fits in perfectly with this esteemed group. What a fantastic way to gain unique insight into this large-scale production of Cabaret.”
Each After Thoughts session takes place from 5-7 p.m. in the Grand Foyer of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. The events begin with time to network, mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres before the featured speaker begins. Seating is limited, so advance registration is recommended. The cost of each program is $12, and attendees are invited to register for each event individually or all four at once. To reserve your spot, send a check (payable to UW-Green Bay Foundation) to: UW-Green Bay Foundation, CL 805, 2420 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay, WI 54311. Walk-up registration also is an option.
