UW-Green Bay Chancellor Gary L. Miller welcomed a packed Phoenix Room for the annual Chancellor’s Veteran Appreciation Reception, Tuesday, Nov. 8. Circuit court judge Kendall Kelley, himself a veteran and presiding official over the Northeast Wisconsin Veterans Treatment Court, was the keynote speaker. He spoke about the success for the Court and the privilege of “helping those who at one point pledged their lives for something more important than themselves…” Things like the Constitution, freedom, and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. “There are very consistent challenges that veterans have as a result of their service,” he said. Kelley has story-after-story of veterans who have turned their lives around once equipped with oversight, structure and treatment.
Also honored at the event were UW-Green Bay veterans who are newly enrolled at UW-Green Bay and UW-Green Bay Public Safety Office Kelly Jones, who was given a special citation for his courageous acts in ushering others to safety while off-duty in the recent Las Vegas mass shooting.
UW-Green Bay Color Guard presented the colors. UW-Green Bay music students and Prof. Randall Meder performed a number of musical selections. Jesse Veeser ’15 presented the POW table ceremony. Veterans Services coordinator Elaina Koltz served as emcee.
