Faculty note: Morgan publication
Eric J. Morgan, assistant professor in Democracy and Justice Studies, has published an article, “Black and White at Center Court: Arthur Ashe and the Confrontation of Apartheid in South Africa,” in Diplomatic History, the journal of record for the field of U.S. foreign relations. The article chronicles the divisive battle between the African-American tennis star and the South African government over Ashe’s desire to visit the country during the zenith of apartheid, and explores the influences of sport and race in the anti-apartheid struggles of the 1970s. Ashe’s story is part of Morgan’s larger book project on transnational anti-apartheid activism in the United States and South Africa, which is under contract with the University of Georgia Press. Morgan also recently returned from Munich, Germany, where he presented a paper, “From Non-Intervention to Intervention: The Clinton Administration, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Refugee Crisis of 1994,” at the conference on The Emergence of Humanitarian Intervention, which was hosted by the German Association for Peace Research and the Historisches Kolleg München.
