UW-Green Bay’s Center for Public Affairs Releases Report on COVID-19 Effect on Northeast Wisconsin Nonprofits

Green Bay, Wis.—The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Center for Public Affairs today (June 3, 2020) has released its report on the Covid-19 Effect on Nonprofit Organizations in Northeast Wisconsin.

Associate Prof. Lora Warner, director of UW-Green Bay’s Center for Public Affairs and Associate Prof. Michael Ford at UW Oshkosh co-authored the report which examined financial issues, human resources, program delivery and needs for support as nonprofit organizations attempt to continue to serve the community after the stay home orders were issued by Governor Evers. UW-Green Bay Assistant Prof. Kerry Kuenzi is collaborating in the statewide project as well.

The research included 139 nonprofit organizations in Northeast Wisconsin (546 organizations statewide), representing large and small organizations ranging from human services and education to social benefit, arts/culture/humanities, environmental and health-related.

The study, conducted in late April, 2020, found that over half of organizations have reduced staff and 80% have reduced usage of volunteers. Most have significantly reduced service delivery and others have quickly had to change how services are delivered to prevent the spread of Covid-19 while meeting the needs of our communities. Three-fourths are concerned about being able to connect with some of their most vulnerable clients due to poor technology access, limited ability to meet face-to-face and challenges communicating with the children, at-risk youth, persons struggling with addiction and isolated older adults that they serve. Northeast Wisconsin nonprofits showed higher rates of collaborating with each other compared to statewide, while they showed a lower rate of collaboration with local government. Just under half have received no emergency funding and two-thirds are very concerned about loss of summer event revenues, which often provide funding for the year. While most report that they can continue to operate for the next 8 weeks, the next round of the survey (in July) will examine how they have fared.

The goal of this report is to share information with government, funders and corporate leaders about how the sector is doing so that community leaders can support the viability of the sector.

“The nonprofit sector is an underappreciated part of our society that really provides the foundation for our quality of life in often-invisible ways,” said Prof. Lora Warner, lead author of the Northeast Wisconsin report. “I am full of admiration for the strength and creativity shown by our local nonprofits, who have turned on a dime, gotten creative, and jumped in as partners to meet our community’s needs. If they are going to be able to continue to do that, they need us, ordinary citizens, to speak up and step up along with them.”

About the statewide project:  In an effort to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Wisconsin nonprofits’ ability to meet their community’s needs, the Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management at the University of Milwaukee, in partnership with the Institute for Nonprofit Management Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and our affiliate faculty throughout the UW-System, will issue a series of surveys to nonprofit leaders throughout 2020. The initial survey was launched in April. The aim of this study is to provide real-time data to government officials, foundations, and other decision-makers about the current economic conditions facing nonprofits and the need for immediate and long-term support in order to ensure the ongoing provision of critical services throughout Wisconsin. The hope is that, by understanding the effect of the pandemic, we can also better understand the recovery process to be required afterward.

There’s still time to enroll in Summer 2020 classes!

Summer 2020 has officially begun, but there’s still opportunities for students to enroll! Some classes start June 15, 2020 and others start July 13, 2020. Check out the schedule of classes here.

Important things to know:

  • If you have not completed the payment agreement for Summer 2020, you have a hold on your account and will not be able to register for summer classes until completed. Completion of the payment agreement confirms your understanding of the financial obligations assumed when registering for classes. It does not require you to make payment until the designated due date (seen here). Remove the Payment Agreement hold today by following these directions.
  • FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION: Students who are interested in Summer Financial Aid must complete a separate application, which is available here. Students also need to complete the 2020-2021 FAFSA and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
  • Check your SIS account for any other holds and take care of them ASAP. If you are unsure how to remove a hold or have other questions, contact us at gboss@uwgb.edu or 920-465-2111.

UW graduates generate remarkable earnings growth

University of Wisconsin System graduates earn a median salary of nearly $50,000 annually just a year after securing their bachelor’s degrees, according to a first-of-its kind data analysis. After five years the median earnings of graduates surpass $66,000.

Though the specific wages vary, such earnings growth occurs for graduates in any UW degree program. Moreover, the analysis found that nearly nine in 10 resident Wisconsin bachelor’s degree graduates remain in the state for employment five years after graduation. Of nonresident graduates, 15 percent are living in Wisconsin five years later.

“I have long believed there is no better investment for the state of Wisconsin than the University of Wisconsin System and that the UW System is a terrific investment for our students as well,” said UW System Regent President Andrew S. Petersen. “This data validates those beliefs. When Wisconsin taxpayers invest in the UW System, our universities produce educated, successful graduates who contribute to their communities and to the economy. When individuals invest in a UW System education, their earning potential skyrockets.”

The analysis by the UW System’s Office of Policy Analysis and Research merges graduation, residence and earnings data for the first time to calculate the economic impact of a UW System education. The results are more precise than typical post-graduation surveys, which rely on self-reported data. Information from more than 12,000 graduates over the past six years was used in the confidential analysis.

“When people are trying to decide whether a public university education is right for them, they should look at this data,” said UW System President Ray Cross. “A UW System education is one of the greatest values in higher education. The lifelong benefits that a college degree provides are priceless and cannot be measured alone by the extraordinary financial payoff.”

Cross noted the numerous other benefits of a college education, including increased civic and social engagement along with improved health.

The analysis released Sunday, May 31 includes systemwide earnings information for graduates one, three, and five years after graduation; earnings for each period by area of study; and residence information for each period.

It is the first in a series of data releases from the ongoing analysis that will be made available over the coming months. The findings:

Scholarship application for undergraduate students in the field of entertainment due June 4

To encourage diversity in the live event design community, Live Design International (LDI), in partnership with TSDCA and USITT, announces the second annual Pat MacKay Diversity In Design Scholarships for undergraduate students. To support the underrepresented and unique voices in the field of entertainment, this scholarship is funded by LDI and awards $5,000 per student.

Students enrolled in lighting design, digital media and projection design, and sound design programs on an undergraduate level, as well as high school seniors who have already been accepted to an undergraduate college or university design program, are eligible to apply online for the $5,000 scholarship. Applications are due on June 4, 2020.

‘Notable Woman in Construction and Design’ helping Cofrin Library | BizTimes

Alexandra Ramsey has 23 years of professional design experience and has been working at Engberg Anderson Architects, Inc. for 19 of those years. She has an extensive portfolio that ranges from local work to various projects across the country. Currently, Ramsey is working with the UW-Green Bay in reimagining Cofrin Library as Wisconsin’s regional hub of research, collaborative learning and partnership.

UW-Green Bay students earn spots in Wisconsin Business Idea Tournament

UW-Green Bay student startups have earned 3 of the 8 spots in the 2020 Wisconsin Business Idea Tournament (WBIT), held by WiSys. This is the first year UWGB students have earned three entries into the WBIT. This year’s WBIT will be held virtually on YouTube and Facebook at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. Cash prizes of $2500 and $1500 will go to the first and second place competitors, respectively.


UWGB’s automatic spot in the WBIT was earned by G-Pods for winning the Innovation in Aging hackathon at UWGB. G-Pods was developed by UWGB students in the Engineering Club and will be presented at the WBIT by Katelyn Desrochers (Mechanical Engineering) and Logan Holbrook (Mechanical Engineering). G-Pods are hearing-aids with life-alert like functionality and sensors to monitor the user’s health data.

Two UWGB student teams earned at-large spots into the WBIT this year.


3C is the startup of UWGB entrepreneurship students Joe Doro ’20, Sydney Gille ’20 and Brett Nimz ‘20, who are also all Business Administration majors. 3C better connects volunteers to collaborate and contribute with charities via an online avenue for completing specific social responsibility, community-building and relationship-creating projects. The team recently placed second in the Spring 2020 UWGB Student Virtual Business Idea Contest and started the business in the spring New Venture Acceleration entrepreneurship class.


Local2You is the startup of UWGB entrepreneurship students Noah Redfearn, Emily Walczyk ’20, Brody Wiest ‘20, and Maddie Yoss ‘20, who are all Business Administration majors. Local2You is an online service providing quality assessment, marketing tools and online sales to entrepreneurs and inventors looking to reach virtual markets. The team recently placed third in the Spring 2020 UWGB Student Virtual Business Idea Contest and also started the business in the spring New Venture Acceleration entrepreneurship class.

The last time UWGB earned an at-large entry into the WBIT was the year Sam Hunt won the tournament with The Local Food Experiment, earning a spot in the Ideadvance accelerator and an automatic spot in the International Business Model Competition, where he placed as a semifinalist in the Top 15 out of over 1,000 entries.

Four of the eight WBIT entries are from Northeast Wisconsin.

Reminder: D2L access will permanently expire on June 30

A message from CATL… In normal times, the end of life for D2L would be a significant event. These days, it almost seems like an afterthought. If you’ve put off retrieving your material from D2L, or are just hearing about D2L going away now, don’t worry, CATL has your back. The information below will help you retrieve and store the materials you may still have left in D2L.

But make no mistake, D2L will shutdown permanently on June 30, 2020 at 11:59 P.M. After this time nobody will be able to access material. The servers which contain D2L will be dismantled and all data will be lost.

Logging in

You may still use the same link as always to log into D2L.

Course materials 

Downloading a course will get you a clean copy of the course; student work will not be part of the download. See the next section for information on how to obtain student information.

We have created instructions for downloading a course from D2L to upload into Canvas.

You may need to create a “blank” course in Canvas to store your old D2L courses.

Retrieving student work 

Downloading a course will get you a clean copy of the course; student work will not be part of the download. You may wish to download student work or your gradebook if you anticipate that students may wish to contact you for letters of recommendation or if they still have outstanding incompletes in D2L.

Here are instructions for downloading your gradebook in D2L and for downloading submissions to a dropbox in D2L. You are also able to download quiz statistics and reports.
