Close-ups: UW-Green Bay brings good cheer to downtown

And a Phoenix in a Shoe Tree…

More than 75 staff, students, alumni and community members marched to UW-Green Bay’s first elaborate entry in the Green Bay Holiday Parade, November 17. In the past, the cheer team and dance squads represented the University.

The float, which had to “loosely” keep with the theme, “A Partridge in a Pear Tree,” was constructed and assembled the past few weeks by students, alumni, faculty and staff and included a paper mache’ shoe tree. The float highlighted 12 special features of the University; among them the state library of the year, sensational academics, award-winning faculty, one of the top women’s basketball teams in the country, arts and performances, and more. Participants said it was a great team-building exercise and a lot of fun negotiating the many trials of a new project. Students and student-athletes were crowd pleasers, as was Joe Schoenebeck (UWGB lab technician) who juggled the entire parade route. Said one small parade-goer about the Nordic ski team practice skates, “I don’t know what those are, but I’d like to have them.”

Student Life, The Phoenix Bookstore, the Alumni Association and alumni affinity partner Liberty Mutual were key contributors to the float. UWGB’s new Alumni Director Kari Moody was the chief organizer.
