Snapshots: Best-ball 35 wins 2013 ‘Convocation Open’
In a tightly contested event, with all teams within five strokes, Tom Barry, Karen Opolka and Patrick Forsythe emerged as winners of the 2013 Convocation Open. Their score of 35 was matched by Chuck Wiseman, Susan Barry and Jeff Gross, but the first hole proved to be the decisive tiebreaker, with the winning team recording a par. The Aug. 29 outing was the second annual occurrence of this friendly faculty/staff/retiree tournament during Convocation Week, a few days before the formal start of the school year. In a stunning turn of events from 2012, when he hit a tremendous drive off the first tee, UW-Green Bay’s smooth-swinging chancellor, Tom Harden, hit a ceremonial first ball that… well… there was little doubt that 2012 “short drive champion” John Arendt would avoid recapturing his title. (Video of Harden’s opening drive was not made available to the media.) Other event winners were Rick Warpinski (long drive – men), Sue Bodilly (long drive – women), Jake Jacobson (closest to the pin), Patrick Forsythe (closest to the bunker), and Pat Przybelski and Trudy Jacobson (long putt). Thanks to the staff at Shorewood Golf Course and all who participated… organizers and participants look forward to seeing you again next year.
