Convocation Open set for Aug. 28

They’re billing it as the “3rd Annual UWGB Convocation Open” to be held on the afternoon of Thursday, August 28, at the Shorewood Golf Course. The format for this social outing will be a three-or four-person scramble.  Golfers (duffers, sandbaggers) of all abilities are encouraged to participate and meet others from the UW-Green Bay community in a less formal setting. The event is open to faculty, staff and retirees, with teams selected by the Planning Committee that consists of Kelly Franz, John Katers and Joe Schoenebeck.

Tee times start at 1 p.m., so if you can afford to take vacation for the afternoon and the very reasonable $10 greens fee ($15 if riding), they would love to hear from you. Please contact Joe Schoenebeck by noon August 22, the preceding Friday, to reserve your spot. What group will dethrone last year’s championship team of Tom Barry, Karen Opolka, and Patrick Forsythe? Chancellor Miller is tentatively scheduled to hit the ceremonial first ball to open the day’s activities. Non-golfers are also welcome to stop by Shorewood for refreshments and casual conversation later in the afternoon.

In a tightly contested event with all teams within five strokes, Tom Barry, Karen Opolka and Patrick Forsythe emerged as winners of the 2013 Convocation Open. They tied at 35 (for nine holes) with Chuck Wiseman, Susan Barry and Jeff Gross, but won on a tiebreaker. The Aug. 29 outing was the second annual occurrence of this friendly faculty/staff/retiree tournament during Convocation Week. We’ve got photos, along with names of the long drivers, best putters and more – click here.

Snapshots: Best-ball 35 wins 2013 ‘Convocation Open’

Convocation Open, Shorewood Golf Course

In a tightly contested event, with all teams within five strokes, Tom Barry, Karen Opolka and Patrick Forsythe emerged as winners of the 2013 Convocation Open.  Their score of 35 was matched by Chuck Wiseman, Susan Barry and Jeff Gross, but the first hole proved to be the decisive tiebreaker, with the winning team recording a par.  The Aug. 29 outing was the second annual occurrence of this friendly faculty/staff/retiree tournament during Convocation Week, a few days before the formal start of the school year. In a stunning turn of events from 2012, when he hit a tremendous drive off the first tee, UW-Green Bay’s smooth-swinging chancellor, Tom Harden, hit a ceremonial first ball that…  well… there was little doubt that 2012 “short drive champion” John Arendt would avoid recapturing his title.  (Video of Harden’s opening drive was not made available to the media.)  Other event winners were Rick Warpinski (long drive – men), Sue Bodilly (long drive – women), Jake Jacobson (closest to the pin), Patrick Forsythe (closest to the bunker), and Pat Przybelski and Trudy Jacobson (long putt).  Thanks to the staff at Shorewood Golf Course and all who participated… organizers and participants  look forward to seeing you again next year.

Good golfers… and then there’s the ‘Convocation Open’

Saw a blurb in the Appleton newspaper recently that mentioned the golfing exploits of a couple of University Union employees: Lee Reinke of Brillion and Rick Warpinski of Green Bay combined to finish ninth and lead area players at the WSGA Net Partners event at The Golf Course at Branch River in Cato.
