While the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 2020 Homecoming Week is in the books, it produced memories that will go down in history. Notably, the recipients of this year’s Alumni Awards, as well as two thrilling victories by the men’s and women’s basketball teams to as they enter into the Horizon League Tournament.
UW-Green Bay students, alumni, staff/faculty and fans/friends celebrate their Phoenix Pride by joining in the fun at Homecoming 2020. Following window decorating, a declaration by the Green Bay Mayor, and other activities, Krash the Kress ended the week and didn’t disappoint. The double header and tailgate between game was enjoyed by students, alumni, fans and members of the community, jamming in the Kress Events Center to cheer-on both Phoenix teams. Homecoming Week 2020 is off to a great start, with Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich declarating this week as “UW-Green Bay Week” in front of approximately 80 students, faculty, staff and alumni present at the Homecoming Pep Rally, in the University Union, Monday, Feb. 24, 2020.
Student Amber Perez (Human Biology and Spanish) and Chancellor Sheryl Van Gruensven opened the pep rally by welcoming Mayor Genrich to the stage, who stated that while he did not attend UW-Green Bay, he feels as if he is a “Phoenix by birth,” due to being born and raised in the area. As he declared this week “UW-Green Bay Week” he also said the downtown city bridges will be lit green this week in support of the University! Genrich was given an honorary “t to the campus,”—an official Homecoming t-shirt, designed by student Jenna Bares (Design Arts).
Green Bay women’s basketball Coach Kevin Borseth, who recently achieved his 500th Division 1 win as a head coach, and Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie also addressed the crowd. They expressed their excitement for the week, reminding people to come to “Krash the Kress” and support UW-Green Bay men’s and women’s basketball on Saturday, Feb. 29. The women play at 2 p.m., and the men play at 7 p.m. with the Krash the Kress tailgate in-between events.
The UW-Green Bay, Sheboygan Campus is hosting a Phoenix Pride Painting and Pizza Party on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Services Office. The event will include decorating the Student Services windows for homecoming. Pizza will be provided. Students and staff should bring creativity!
Alumni, get ready for Homecoming 2020 with some new apparel! The Phoenix Bookstore will be hosting a sale from Friday, Feb. 14 to Friday, Feb. 21, 2020; the sale includes 20 percent off one apparel or gift item, with the presentation of a coupon.
Don’t forget to register for Krash the Kress, which is taking place on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020. Krash the Kress is a Wisconsin-style tailgate; it is free for students and is a signature part of Homecoming 2020. This year, there is a double header with a women’s game at 2 p.m. and a men’s game at 7 p.m. Come join the tailgate party in between the games at 4 p.m.

Homecoming 2020 takes place February 24 through 29, 2020, and you’re invited to continue in a new tradition that started last year: the Office Decorating Competition! The winning office will be announced via campus-wide email and will receive a pizza party. There is no wrong way to show your school spirit! You can decorate your office walls, windows, put a basketball court on your floor…whatever you want. Please feel free to utilize any supplies (paper, streamers, window markers, etc…) from the office of Student Life free of charge to aid in your decoration. The Homecoming theme for 2020 is “Around the World.” All offices and/or windows must be decorated by Friday, Feb. 21, 2020 to be considered for the competition.
To be part of the official judging, simply email the Student Homecoming Committee President, Amber Perez at email@example.com by Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020. The Student Homecoming Committee will judge all offices/windows based on creative design, artistry and other criterion they decide. Please support for this new tradition. The additional campus locations will also be hosting decorating and pizza parties in the spirit of Homecoming. Homecoming Week 2020 is around the corner—Feb. 24-29! Krash the Kress at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 29, the culminating event of the week, is a traditional, Wisconsin-style tailgate party for the UW-Green Bay community. The event, sandwiched between a double header with Green Bay women’s basketball at 2 p.m. and Green Bay men’s basketball at 7 p.m., features serious fun for everyone with yard games, an interactive DJ, great festival-style food, chances to win major prizes and more.
As you can imagine, it takes many volunteers to make Homecoming and Krash the Kress a success. Please consider volunteering! Event organizers appreciate you sharing your time and talent. All volunteers receive complimentary entry to the Krash the Kress Tailgate ($10 value and includes a Homecoming t-shirt, two beverage tickets good for soda, water or Bud products and chances to win incredible prizes).

The week features many events, kicking off on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020 with a pep rally in the Cloud Commons at noon. Some notable events that require prior registration include the Phoenix Gathering on Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Phoenix Backstage on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. (at Backstage, formerly Meyer Backstage, downtown Green Bay) and Krash the Kress on Saturday, Feb. 29, featuring a basketball double header with the women’s basketball team taking on Youngstown State at 2 p.m. and the men’s basketball team playing Cleveland State at 7 p.m. A tailgate party will take place between both games at 4 p.m. See more and register.
