UWGB students plan ‘Jingle Brawl’ video game fundraiser for Dec. 5
GREEN BAY — Partying with Pikachu? Playing video football? All in a day’s work for UW-Green Bay game-studies students interested in raising money for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
A group of students has organized “UWGB Jingle Brawl 2015,” scheduled to take place this Saturday (Dec. 5), between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Phoenix Club, located on the lower level of the University Union on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. They’re inviting members of the general public to join them for the family-friendly event.
Admission is free. Donations collected during the event will go to Children’s Hospital. Anyone who wishes to donate can also do so after the event through the end of the year, at http://www.extra-life.org/team/jinglebrawl
Throughout the day, students will be hosting various video game tournaments, holding a raffle, demonstrating tabletop games, monitoring community play-throughs, and giving away prizes. Registration for tournament participation is free and begins at 11 a.m.
“Our students have been excited and engaged in developing this project,” says UW-Green Bay Communication Prof. Bryan Carr, who notes that the project is a service-learning element of one of his courses. “They are looking forward to using video games in a positive way to serve the community.”
UWGB’s new, interdisciplinary emphasis in game studies focuses on the business, theory, and philosophy behind the video games and the video game industry. Carr says the game studies program hopes to broaden students’ perspectives and critically analyze video games as a newly emerging academic subject.
