Lifelong Learning Kickoff is July 28

UW-Green Bay’s Lifelong Learning Institute is Fueled by the Passions of its Many Volunteers

Green Bay, WI – As the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) prepares to return to in-person courses this fall, the creativity tapped by the challenges of 2020 continue. With only one full-time program specialist, LLI is fueled almost entirely by the passions of its many volunteers. This flotilla of volunteer committee members and volunteer presenters rallied during the pandemic with little notice or prep time to provide a variety of classes for its members.

LLI is hosting an event introducing the community to what they can experience as members of Lifelong Learning Institute. The event will take place at the Neville Museum in Green Bay on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteers from the Publicity and Promotions Committee will share information and a sampling of two popular courses, “Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and Animal Ambassadors” and “From Bedpan Commandos to Cadet Nurses: WWII Nurses,” presented by Robert Cook.

This fall, LLI has created an exciting line-up of 246 in-person courses, live and recorded online classes, outdoor classes and tours. This ambitious line-up is put together by volunteer members serving on curriculum committees in each UW-Green Bay campus location: Green Bay, Manitowoc/Sheboygan and Marinette, motivated by their communities and the collective interests of members.

Eileen Johnson is on the Curriculum Committee for Green Bay, and she says, “I take inspiration from presentations I’ve seen in the community, such as the library, the Neville, the Botanical Gardens, and things I’ve either read about or had seen on television, asking myself, ‘What do I want to learn?’”

Curriculum committees are also inspired by friends, presenters and happenings in the news and their communities. A broad array of interests is represented:

  • Arts, crafts & culinary
  • Local interest & tours
  • History & genealogy
  • Reading, writing and music
  • Religion & policy
  • Fitness, nature & travel
  • Self-help & games

This fall, members will be able to mix and match formats and enjoy the quality classes LLI is known for, a quality reflected in LLI instructors, who are often retired UW-Green Bay faculty or expert enthusiasts in the community.

Robert Cook is a long-time member, volunteer and presenter. He presents courses on world events of historical significance, giving them a new perspective. “I believe that there are areas of history that were ignored when most of us of our era were being taught.  Those areas are both fascinating and necessary to more fully understand how we have arrived at this point in our history.  Presenting in those areas allows my understanding to grow and, hopefully, does the same for the rest of the class. LLI members are known for their perceptive questions,” says Cook.

The annual LLI membership fee is $140 – an average cost of $11.66 per month – and includes two semesters. Members may initially register for up to 15 classes per semester with additional classes available based on enrollment.

Other benefits to membership include: exclusive invitations to social events, lending privileges to the LLI educational DVD library, early bird notice of registration, subscription to members-only newsletter and special invitations to unique day trip and domestic travel opportunities (may require an extra fee).

Registration is completely online and opens Monday, August 9, 2021 at 10 a.m. A gorgeous 20-page+ catalog of classes is now available at www.lli@uwgb.edu. Members are encouraged to register early for the best selection.
