600 campers learning ‘resilient, problem-solving skills’ at LeadGB summer camps
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 17, 2024
Camps are in their final week of the summer on the UW-Green Bay campus
GREEN BAY, Wis. – For the first time, UW-Green Bay is in the final week of hosting youth leadership programs as part of the University’s summer camp program line-up. More than 600 kids from around the region, ranging in age from six to 14 participated in the LeadGB series – LeadGB Girls and LeadGB Boys. LeadGB is run by local leaders, Chelsea Faase and Chuck Brehm, who draw on their decades of experience as professional educators to create impactful programming for campers.
“The LeadGB camps create a space for campers to learn life skills that help them to be resilient problem solvers, develop relationships and communication skills and become more attuned to their physical and mental health,” said Chelsea Faase, director of LeadGB at UW-Green Bay. “They leave camp each day empowered to succeed now and into the future. At a time when our nation’s youth are facing unprecedented mental health challenges, programming like LeadGB helps them on their path to becoming strong, capable leaders.”
Through challenging hands-on activities, guest speakers from the community and education on healthy and positive life choices, the youth participating in the camps have opportunities to understand who they can grow into as healthy individuals and leaders. Each day campers spend time reading about inspirational figures, playing games that help them get to know each other, working on creative projects that express themselves and engaging in physical activity. Mentorship, storytelling, and confidence building are the pillars that ensure these future leaders are successful in whatever endeavor they undertake.
LeadGB Girls theme this year was “Building the Future You Want to See.” Each day provided different opportunities for campers to frame their future. LeadGB Boys developed a chant to rally around: “Lead You! Lead Me! LeadGB!” Campers participated in a variety of team building activities each day that challenge them physically, mentally, and socially. The daily curriculum for both camps changes each year. Campers are encouraged to participate every summer and build on what they have learned year over year. Nicole Schutte, parent of a camper from the first week of LeadGB, had this to say, “We couldn’t have been a part of a better organization! My daughter is already so excited for next year!”.
LeadGB Girls camp serves girls entering grades one through eight; LeadGB Boys serves boys entering grades four through eight. Camp registration for next summer opens in January of 2025. More information can be found on Facebook at LeadGBgirls and LeadGBboys or on the UW-Green Bay Camps web site.
