Summer camp program at UW-Green Bay teaches young students leadership and empowerment
GREEN BAY (WLUK) — A summer camp program at UW-Green Bay is helping teach Northeast Wisconsin youth how to be good leaders.
LeadGB is designed for elementary and middle school students in the area to learn leadership and development skills. There are two five-day sessions in June for LeadGB Girls, and two five-day sessions in July for LeadGB Boys.
FOX 11’s Michelle Melby served as a guest speaker for the first day of this week’s LeadGB Girls camp. “Building the Brand” was Monday’s theme.
Michelle spoke to the students about her job as a television news anchor at FOX 11, highlighting the importance of standing for all the right things and promoting yourself in the right way. She also discussed ways to do things that shine a positive light on yourself and your community, like FOX 11 does with its “Making A Difference” segments.
UW-Green Bay describes LeadGB Girls as a female-based, female-supported program dedicated to developing future female leaders.
“LeadGB camp was initiated to provide young girls with opportunities to enhance their life skills, maximize their overall wellness, and develop personal growth strategies. Girls today experience an unprecedented amount of stress in their lives. The ability to not only handle these stressors, but to turn them into growth opportunities is an important factor in future success. Even at a young age, young women need to feel a sense of empowerment and one of the best ways to build confidence and self-awareness is by connecting with positive female role models.”
