‘Freedom Writer’ Manuel Scott to speak at the Christie Theatre
GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is hosting Manuel V. Scott, an original “Freedom Writer,” who will share his life experiences as one of the members of the class featured in the 2007 movie “Freedom Writers.”
The presentation will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Christie Theatre of the University Union, located on the campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Released in 2007, “Freedom Writers” is a movie based on the real-life story of a young teacher who leads at-risk high school students on a journey away from hatred and racism toward tolerance and understanding.
Scott, whose story was told along with other classmates in the movie, draws upon his experiences to help inspire people to “shake off mediocrity and live up to their greatness,” according to his website.
Scott had dropped out of school, turned to a life of crime and was heading down a path that would have “destroyed” him, he tells audiences today, had he not beat the odds and turned his life around. He shares the story of his “amazing transformation” in his presentation.
His presentation promises to be “full of life-changing messages,” according to the Office of Student Life, sponsor of the event. He challenges audience members to rise to new heights with a message of hope and transformation.
In conjunction with Scott’s visit, there will also be a showing of the movie “Freedom Writers” the day before his appearance on campus. That screening is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, in the Christie Theatre.
