UW-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery featuring works of emeritus professor

Lawton Gallery features David Damkoehler artworkThe University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery will host a new exhibit, “David Damkoehler: Time and Materials – 1969-2008” from Thursday, Feb. 5, to Thursday, Feb. 26.

Damkoehler retired in December 2008 and was awarded emeritus status. He was an early member of the University art faculty, joining UW-Green Bay in 1969.

The exhibition is a retrospective of selected works — sculpture and jewelry — Damkoehler created over the last 39 years. Accompanying the exhibition is a catalogue that includes an interview with Damkoehler by Daniel Keegan, director of the Milwaukee Art Museum, which gives insight into Damkoehler’s artistic career and his teaching philosophy.

Damkoehler joined the UW-Green Bay faculty in 1969, the year the campus opened at its bayshore location. He won the Founders Association Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 1998 for his work as an artist. His emphasis on industrial materials and art metals — using primarily stainless steel in jewelry, flatware and ornaments — gained favorable national attention, with placement in permanent collections nationwide and dozens of national and international exhibitions. He also designed the University’s ceremonial mace, which is carried into commencement ceremonies by the senior-most faculty member.
