Slideshow: ‘Higher Ed, Lower Debt’ advocates visit campus
A pair of local lawmakers used the plaza level of the UW-Green Bay Cofrin Library for a news conference Wednesday morning, Oct. 30. Democratic legislators are advancing the so-called “Higher Ed, Lower Debt” proposal to establish a Wisconsin Student Loan Refinancing Authority, which would allow student borrowers to refinance at lower rates. It would also provide a break on state income taxes for tuition expenses. See our photo gallery for more.
‘Press-Gazette’ coverage, ‘Journal Sentinel’ background, ‘Post-Crescent’ endorsement
Reporter Patti Zarling covered the news conference and photographer Lukas Keapproth captured a few classroom shots (physics and organic chemistry). See the Green Bay Press-Gazette article.
The proposal discussed Wednesday has been advanced at similar news conferences around the state, including one covered last week by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The bill’s co-authors say the proposed state Student Loan Refinancing Authority would not use tax dollars to refinance the loans, but rather sell bonds to accomplish the refinancing in a “pay-as-you-go” fashion. In a Sunday editorial headlined “Bill would get Wisconsin student loan borrowers a better start,” the Post-Crescent of Appleton weighs in with an endorsement of the refinancing concept. Read the Post-Crescent editorial.
