Spanish scholar in residence leaves knowledge, novels as she heads for home

Author Luisa Etxenike wrapped up her tenure as the Spanish program’s fall scholar in residence at the end of October — but not without leaving behind plenty of knowledge and a couple of her own works.

The award-winning Etxenike has six novels and numerous short stories to her credit. On Thursday (Oct. 31), she presented two of those novels, El detective de sonidos (2011) and El ángulo ciego (Euskadi Literary Award 2009) to Cofrin Library director Paula Ganyard, leaving them as donations to the library’s collection. The signed copies will remain a tangible reminder of Etxenike’s time at UW-Green Bay.

“I’ve been very busy here,” a smiling Etxenike said, flanked by Associate Prof. Cristina Ortiz and Assistant Prof. Hernan Fernandez-Meardi. “For me, it’s been a great experience.”

Etxenike is no stranger to the classroom, as she teaches creative writing workshops at the Cultural Center Ernest Lluch (San Sebastián, Spain) and at the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao). She also teaches courses on “Theory of Narration” and “Gender Studies” for the University of the Basque Country (Aula de la Experiencia, Bilbao). During her time at UW-Green Bay, Etxenike taught ENGLISH 338 World Literatures (team-taught with Assistant Prof. Gabriel Saxton-Ruiz) and SPANISH 465 Special Topics: Contar con cuentos (team-taught with Ortiz). Etxenike also spent ample time in the local community.
