Remembering Boyd ‘Bish’ Coleman

He was a full-time lecturer in Managerial Systems from 1973 to 1981. Before that he was a one-time merchandise buyer who left H.C. Prange to found what was described as the region’s first discount-store chain, Schmitt’s Inc., which eventually was absorbed by the Copps’ Company. News has been received of the death of former UW-Green Bay faculty member Boyd “Bish” Coleman, who passed away Aug. 10 in Madison, at age 83. He is survived by his wife and their four children. Ryan Funeral Home of Madison was in charge of arrangements. In a 1978 feature article in the student Fourth Estate newspaper, Coleman was quoted about bringing a retail business background to his teaching: “When you accept a job, you do your job or else. The business world and the classroom are similar in that way… It’s a good learning experience to know that you have to produce… If a student is not going to do it now, they might not discipline themselves to do it later…”
