Artists’ ‘Exquisite Uterus Project’ draws notice
The New York-based blog cultureID has picked up on an ongoing project and upcoming exhibit involving UW-Green Bay Art Prof. Alison Gates and Helen Klebesadel, director of the UW System Women’s Studies Consortium. The two artists have organized a collaborative feminist art project called “The Exquisite Uterus: The Art of Resistance.” An exhibit will be held in conjunction with the regional Wisconsin Women’s Studies and LGBTQ Conference being planned for October 5-6 at UW-Oshkosh, with art on view at the Steinhilber Art Gallery. The art addresses what some activists describe as the “war on women.” Klebesadel and Gates are inviting artists (male and female) to use a common canvas — a square of organic white cotton imprinted with a black and gray medical outline of a female reproductive system — and employ their creativity in embellishing the fabric for inclusion in the finished project. Those interested (pro or con, with uterus or without) can find details at Klebesadel’s own website.
