Who Askew? Phoenix swimmer is guy who beat the guy who beat Phelps

It’s a small world: Our phone rang the other day with news that former Phoenix swimmer Jason Askew, an Accounting and Business Administration major from Durban, South Africa, was being interviewed that very minute on a local sports radio program. We missed most of the interview, but got the gist. On the day that Chad Le Clos, 20, of South Africa had beaten Michael Phelps in the 200-meter butterfly finals, ending the American swimming star’s Olympic reign in what was dubbed his “signature event,” Askew was recalling the day several years ago that he beat the guy who beat Phelps. As it turns out, Askew and Le Clos competed against one another in provincial meets back in Durban. Couldn’t find a podcast of the radio show, but did find this online bio for the current UW-Green Bay international student and student-assistant to the Phoenix swimming coach: click here.
