Shorewood’s Nate Rusch ‘in-residence’ at U.S. Open this week
Nathan Rusch, UW-Green Bay’s Shorewood Golf Course superintendent, is on “vacation” June 12-18 attending his own version of summer camp — a week-long venture as a superintendent/greenskeeper-in-residence for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. Rusch was invited to apply and was accepted residency to help support the national golf tournament. He has been assigned bunker duty on the front nine of the course. He and a host other talented grounds personnel wake up early to board a 3 a.m. shuttle to the course to start 4 a.m. daily preparations. The crew works until mid-morning, takes a break until 3 p.m. and works until 7 p.m. in preparation for next day’s play. This schedule repeats daily through the end of the championship on Sunday. Rusch’s supervisor Rick Warpinski says, “keep a close eye on the quality workmanship of the bunkers on the front nine and know that UW-Green Bay personnel played a part in support of this prestigious national championship event.”
