Transcript: I knew that I wanted to be a Psychology major because I knew that I wanted to help people. As soon as I toured here at Green Bay, I knew it felt like home away from home and I knew that it would be a good fit for me. There’s not one set career path that you’re going to have through the Psychology Department. You could go through the counseling and mental health but you could also go through research and development. In high school, I thought that psychology was only counseling and therapy and that’s farthest from the truth. After taking the Social Cognitive Affective Neuroscience that Dr. Jason Cowell teaches, it’s what got me interested in the neuroscience and the research aspect of psychology and I knew that that’s exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So, we have many research Labs on campus one of them is the PANE Lab and that’s where they use different pharmaceutical drugs to see how they affect behavior, how they affect mental illness and treating mental illness. And then I’m in the Neuroscience Lab on campus, I’ve been a part of that since I was a sophomore. And we do hands-on research every day with EEG. We get to have human participants in our lab. We get to research traumatic brain injuries or early life stress and how that affects you socially, how that affects your empathy, morality it’s how it develops over time. I could go on and on about the Psychology professors here at UW-Green Bay, they truly just want to see you succeed. Dr. Cowell and I are working closely with other students to get a publication. Having your name on a publication sets you apart from everyone else. It is unheard of for undergrads to do the type of research that we’re doing and I’m really excited for how that’s going to set me up for later, graduate school (and) getting a Ph.D. later. I feel like I’m on the right path to do exactly what I want to do. And so, I feel like UW-Green Bay has prepared me for my future by giving me as many opportunities as possible and allowing me to make the decisions that are right for me. I want to go on to study neuroscience at a probably a larger institution and I want to eventually get my Ph.D. and become a professor and have my own research lab someday.
