CCIHS Teacher on a mission earns her high school a Gold Standard Challenge Grant
Alana Eder is an approved teacher with UW-Green Bay’s College Credit in High School (CCIHS) program. She was on a mission to make sure high school students at Oconto High School received education in personal finance at a college level. Luckily she had the support of her principal, her school district, Associate Prof. Mussie Teclezion and Prof. Karl Schindl, both in the Austin E. Cofrin School of Business, and Crystal Williams, program specialist for College Credit in High School. Eder partnered with her principal, Adam DeWitt, and school counselors to persuade their school board to adopt a personal finance course as a formal graduation requirement that all students take.
Superintendent Emily Miller endorsed the course, stating, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students. It aligns with our goal of bridging our students’ learning to real life. It also supports our goal of providing pathways to our colleges.”
Oconto High School is the 19th high school nationwide to receive a Gold Standard Challenge Grant from Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF). Successful completion of Alana’s course “Career and Finance” not only satisfies a high school graduation requirement but earns her students three transcript credits at UW-Green Bay, transferable to most colleges of their choice.
Eder, a personal finance instructor with an advanced degree, worked with Teclezion, Schindl and Williams to get accredited in CCIHS, and had this to say, “Thanks for the partnership UW-Green Bay! I am so extremely fortunate to work with such amazing people and truly appreciate all of your support, guidance and leadership! I am extremely grateful for all of you! Crystal made it extremely easy on my end to be able to offer college credit to our students and I appreciate that!”
NOTE: High school teachers who meet UW-Green Bay faculty approval are able to offer UW-Green Bay College Credit in High School (CCIHS) courses in their high schools.
