Kudos: Meinhardt and Gates have piece selected for art show
Alison Gates (Art and Design) and Daniel Meinhardt (Human Biology and Women’s and Gender Studies) have received word that their mixed media art piece, Gender Reveal Party, has been chosen for the show Intimate Systems by the Artists in Residence at Madison’s 100arts. About 25 artists were selected from about 100 submitted pieces. Information about the show can be seen at 100state.com/experiences. Here’s a description: “This work integrates original medical illustrations by biologist Daniel Meinhardt with baby clothing dyed by textiles artist Alison Gates. By juxtaposing complex variation in sexual anatomy at birth and the color coding of infant clothing we expose the inadequacy of the binary view of sex and challenge the perceived right of society to know an individual’s sex. The work also addresses the relevance of scientific information to social/ethical questions and how that information can be communicated visually.” The exhibit is scheduled for Feb. 6 through April 28.
