UW-Green Bay is major sponsor for MLK community event, set for Jan. 18

The community is invited to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 19th Annual Community Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 18 in the Student Commons at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, 2740 W. Mason St.

The free event will feature performances, a catered lunch, and reflections on Dr. King’s message. Organizers also will distribute awards for the annual K-12 poster and creative-writing contest, which asked area students to reflect on the 2014 program’s theme, “A Vision for Peace.”

The MLK Celebration program features remarks by community and educational leaders, dance performances by the Hmong, Nia and Lasya Dancers, a rendition of “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” songs by the Oneida Hymn Singers, and a rendition of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. A free lunch will follow the event.

The MLK Celebration is organized by a volunteer committee comprised of members from NWTC, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, St. Norbert College and other community members.
