Aaron Mitchell explores UW-Green Bay men’s basketball in ‘Phoenix Rising’ book
Aaron A. Mitchell attended his first University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball game in 1989, when his father took him to an exhibition against the Soviet Union Spartak at Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena. He was six at the time, and from that moment, he was hooked. “You walk in that very first time, and as a kid, you don’t really know what you are smelling,” said Mitchell, a 2001 Green Bay Preble graduate. “That smell of beer and buttered popcorn. I think it was a test for my dad to see, ‘Is this going to work? Is he ready to go to games?’ “That year, I went to a few games. That next year, every single game listening to the radio. Dialed in when the tournament came to town. It was pandemonium. It was awesome.”
