To understand why this might not be the best idea, let us take a look at a theory called the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and how it explains two different ways we can be persuaded to buy something.
The ELM is a theory that helps us understand how people make decisions when they see an ad. It suggests that there are two main ways people can be persuaded: the central route and the peripheral route.
- Central Route Processing: This is when people take their time to think deeply about a decision. They focus on the details, facts, and the quality of the arguments presented. For example, if you are buying a car, you might research its safety features, fuel efficiency, and reliability before making a decision. This route works best for important, high-involvement decisions.
- Peripheral Route Processing: This is when people do not think too much about the details. Instead, they are influenced by things like catchy music, a funny joke, or a famous person in the ad. This route works better for simple, low-involvement decisions, like choosing a new candy or a pair of sunglasses because they do not require much thought.
Why Celebrities May Not Be the Best Choice for Car Insurance Ads
Car insurance is a high-involvement decision, meaning it is important and requires careful thought.
