Prof. Weinschenk comments… President Trump’s illness forces cancellation of planned Wisconsin rally in covid-19 ‘red zone’ – The Washington Post

Had President Trump not contracted the coronavirus, he would have been rallying supporters on Saturday just outside Green Bay, Wis., a red part of a swing state — and a “red zone” with one of the fastest-growing coronavirus infection rates in America.

“The fact that the president downplays the virus has gives his supporters permission to say ‘Well, it’s overblown. It’s no big deal,’” said Aaron Weinschenk, chair of Political Science at UW-Green Bay. “It’s become a thoroughly political issue.”

Weinschenk said he doubted that would change even with Trump’s diagnosis, which came after the president repeatedly modeled behavior his own scientific advisers had warned Americans against.
