GREEN BAY- This week UW-Green Bay’s golf team earned an important honor, being named the Horizon League’s 2023 winner of the Raise Your Sights award.

The Raise Your Sights award is awarded each year to the top academic team in the conference, for both men’s and women’s teams.

The criteria for deciding the winner of the award is determined by the team’s cumulative academic GPA for the year.

The Phoenix women’s golf team achieved a team cumulative GPA of 3.85. The winner of the men’s award was IUPUI’s tennis team, with an impressive 3.809 GPA.

Eight different League sports were represented overall including men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s golf, women’s tennis, baseball, men’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s soccer.

“I want to congratulate the IUPUI men’s tennis team and the Green Bay women’s golf team, as well as all of our top teams, for their incredible academic achievements this year,” Horizon League Commissioner Julie Roe Lach said. “It is extraordinary to see all these student-athletes excel academically. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are proud to recognize these student-athletes for their excellence in the classroom, in addition to athletics.”

“One of the things I value when recruiting is GPA and dedication both on and off the course,” said Head Coach Lee Reinke.

Reinke said he is very proud of his team and their efforts this past season, both academically and athletically.

“They are truly dedicated to their studies and they all have no walk-in-the-park majors: Engineering, Accountant, (2) Physicians Assistants, Business Administration, and (2) Human Biology…..this last semester there were six 4.0 GPAs and a 3.7 GPA.  There are seven ladies on the roster. This was a special group of young ladies with four graduating – they will all be very successful in life there is no doubt….very high achievers.”

In the fall semester of 2022, the team earned an impressive cumulative GPA of 3.9.

The UW- Green Bay women’s golf team is not unfamiliar, however, with experiencing academic success. Over the course of the past five years, the team has been in the top 15 Division I teams for their GPA, ranking as high as 3rd one year.

“It shows dedication on and off the course. For the women to have six 4.0’s is incredible,” said Reinke.

Yet, the women’s golf team is not the only academically high performing team on campus this year.

UW-Green Bay student athletes achieved an excellent GPA of 3.5 for the 2023 spring semester. The Phoenix student-athletes have continued to perform well over the past few years under the guidance of Assistant AD for Academic Services, Mike Kline. Over the previous 46 semesters, the athletes have consistently maintained a 3.0 GPA for better, continuing a streak that has lasted since the spring of 2000.

The women’s soccer team posted 14 student-athletes with a 3.75 GPA or better. In addition, 13 of their 14 athletic programs recorded a 3.2 GPA or higher, including nine with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Approximately 65% of GB’s 217 student-athletes had a 3.5 GPA or better, while 83.4% had a 3.0 or better.
