Public online sessions part of push for national designation for Green Bay water research | WLUK

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — The public is invited to weigh in on efforts to protect Northeast Wisconsin waters by designating the Green Bay area as a national reserve. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and local officials, are holding online sessions to learn more about designating the waters of Green Bay a National Estuarine Research Reserve.UWGB says the NERR designation would help address local coastal management issues and help protect the world’s largest freshwater estuary. Estuaries are semi-enclosed areas where Great Lakes waters mix with waters from rivers, streams and bays. The NERR designation would bring in more than $1 million per year in funding for scientific research, education, stewardship and training. It would also provide for a visitor center, lab space, a conference area and a boat launch.
