UWGB researchers may have found oldest rock in Wisconsin | WBAY News
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – University of Wisconsin Green Bay has been doing a research assignment and researchers believe they have found the oldest rock in Wisconsin.
Assistant Professor Shawn Malone says the rock was formed by a magma about 3.2 billion years ago.
He found the crystalized rock in the Wisconsin River Valley beneath the dams. Malone says he plans to hang onto his ancient find.
“If the technology improves or scientists want to study it, we’ve got a chunk of it available that we’ve done the work on so that they can use the same material to follow up on the results or do new tests to see what other information we can get out of it,” said Malone.
Malone says although it’s the oldest rock found in Wisconsin, it’s still pretty new compared to the oldest in the world. That credit goes to a rock in Canada, reportedly 4 billion years old.
