GREEN BAY (WLUK) — It’s a look back in time using cutting-edge technology.

A virtual reality tour of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam had a special showing at UW-Green Bay.

t’s about 4,000 miles from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Lifelong Learning Class Vice President Rob Miller says on Monday morning, it’s only a few clicks away.

“The Anne Frank house gets 1.2 million visitors a year. They sell their tickets six months in advance. And here we have an actual tour, room-by-room, by one of their presenters,” said Rob Miller, Lifelong Learning Class Vice President.

To escape Nazi persecution, the German-born Jewish family fled to Amsterdam in 1934. That’s where a young Anne Frank, documented everyday life while hiding in a 450-square foot space called the “secret annex.” From her post card collection, to struggles with food shortages, eight people spent 761 days inside, living, and waiting in fear. In August of 1944, military police arrested the Franks, taking them to concentration camps where Anne, reportedly died from disease at the age of 15 or 16. Her father Otto Frank survived the war, and published “The Diary of a Young Girl” in 1947. About two dozen people attended the virtual tour, Many of the personal belongings, and furnishings were digitally recreated. Kathy Lepak says she visited the actual Anne Frank house in 1994.

“That’s amazing what they can show to people nowadays. It’s really, really beautiful,” said Kathy Lepak, Green Bay.

Connie Greenawald says she’s impressed with the technology and the essence behind it.

“I think the message is more true today than ever, that we help people who need help. We try to take care of the persecuted,” said Connie Greenawald, Little Suamico.

The showing is part of the Lifelong Learning Class at UWGB.
