Green Lake Bird and Nature Club presents snowy owl program | News | riponpress.com

Join the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. and meet the founders of Project SOAR (Snowy Owl Airport Rescue).

Project SOAR’s mission is to rescue and relocate overwintering snowy owls and other raptors from airports where they pose as hazards. It was formed by three people in response to a legal shooting of a snowy owl at a Wisconsin airport in 2017.

Among the co-founders are:

Frank Ujazdowski: The lead volunteer falconer who spends most of his time capturing and relocating birds of prey that pose as hazards at airports. He is a project manager at Tweet/Garot Mechanical and has a large family with many grandchildren.

Erin Giese: A co-coordinator of the project, Giese works closely with Janet Wissink primarily on securing project funding, report writing and social media. Giese works as the associate director at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Cofrin Center for Biodiversity in conservation and bird projects and is president of NEW Bird Alliance. She spends most of her free time with her husband, young son and parents.

Wissink: A co-coordinator of the project, Wissink works closely with Erin Giese on project outreach, including designing project brochures and apparel, and securing funding. Wissink is retired and president of Winnebago Audubon. She recently earned her Wisconsin Master Naturalist Certificate. She and her husband enjoy time at their cabin and volunteering at Hartman Creek State Park.

This program will take place in the ballroom on the second floor of the Town Square Community Center, 492 Hill St., in downtown Green Lake. It is free and open to the public.

Attendees should enter through the main entrance and take the stairway to the right. Wheelchair and handicap accessibility is also available at the rear of the building, with ample parking near the doorway. People may bring a snack to share if they wish; beverages will be available for purchase.

The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club meets the second Tuesday of the month from September through May. Anyone with an interest in birds and nature may attend.
