Academic calendar might be factor in Phoenix women’s success
It’s possible. Although the article doesn’t compare UW-Green Bay to other colleges, a recent piece by Green Bay Press-Gazette sports reporter Scott Venci suggests the school’s typically lengthy January break is an advantage for both academics and athletics. Coaches and members of the Phoenix women’s basketball team say they love the ability to focus on basketball this time of year. “As a recruiter, you want to show all of your positives,” said assistant coach Sarah Bronk. “We can say, ‘Hey, you can focus on basketball during January … you don’t have to (attend) study table hours.’ During this time, it’s just basketball. That’s a huge thing. A selling point to recruits.” The corollary is that more of the academic semester takes place apart from the playing calendar. Whether it’s good students, gifted educators or a favorable calendar … and it’s certainly all three … the Phoenix women have had the top GPA in the nation and numerous high finishes. Nice article.
