Online anger: Martin weighs in during Huffpost chat
Associate Prof. Ryan Martin shared his anger expertise with an online audience Monday (Nov. 24), appearing in a Huffpost Live Internet chat on the issue of so-called “morality viral videos.” These videos, a recent one of which showed a woman being catcalled more than 100 times on the streets of New York City, have been inspiring online outrage as they become increasingly popular. One of three panelists participating in the video chat, Martin spoke about the ubiquity of social media and how it gives people more opportunities to respond to such videos — often making them angry as a result. Individuals also tend to be friends with or follow people who are likely to post comments consistent with their beliefs, which means people often respond with anger since they are unlikely to consider other perspectives, Martin said.
