Faculty note: Hutchison at London sport symposium

Ray Hutchison, professor and chair of the Urban and Regional Studies program, presented a paper on suburban sports at the Sport and Leisure History Seminar Summer Symposium titled “Sport and Leisure in Suburbs and New Towns: Communities, Identities, and Interactions.” The symposium was hosted by the Institute of Historical Research in London on July 21 and 22. The paper reflects a return to one of Hutchison’s earlier research interests in leisure and recreation studies, an area where he had numerous publications in the 1990s. Hutchison’s research collaborations with Mark Clapson of the University of Westminster, including an edited volume and planned comparative research on suburbanization with colleagues from Europe, South America and Asia, made the connection for his participation in this conference.
