Faculty note: Shelton publication
The Journal of Policy History’s newest issue features an article written by UW-Green Bay Assistant Prof. Jon Shelton (Democracy and Justice Studies) entitled “‘Compulsory Unionism’ and Its Critics: The National Right to Work Committee, Teacher Unions, and the Defeat of Labor Law Reform in 1978.” The article shows that anti-union groups like the NRTWC characterized public employee unions as threats to freedom to undermine badly needed labor law reform in the private sector in 1977-78. The failure of labor law reform in turn, Shelton argues, continued to make organizing difficult and weakened American labor unions in the forty years after.
