Pletcher on WiscNet proposal: Internet costs would jump

Associate Provost for Information Services Kathy Pletcher helped break down the proposed state budget changes surrounding WiscNet during a TV interview Tuesday with WFRV, Channel 5. The controversial budget provision would require the UW System to return more than $37 million in federal grand funding for high-speed broadband access, and would prevent the System from participating in the statewide nonprofit WiscNet. “Currently we spend $70,000 a year on my WiscNet,” Pletcher told Channel 5. “If I have to procure that service through the (BadgerNet Converged Network), that would cost me over $400,000.”
