Faculty note: Prof. Clampitt pens chapter with Boldt president on leadership

UW-Green Bay Prof. Phil Clampitt (Blair Endowed Chair of Communication) was one of a few scholars selected to write an article about the future of leadership for The Journal of Leadership Studies. His article, “Smart Leadership Communication in the Age of Mobile Phones” was co-written with Bob DeKoch, president of The Boldt Company. They posed a simple question that every leader should contemplate: How should leaders communicate, given smart phone-shaped sensibilities for fingertip-quick information, video game-like decision making and social media hyper-connectivity? Unlike tapping on a smart phone, finding relevant and useful information may require time to generate and discover. Unlike a video game, organizations may not be able to provide instantaneous feedback on success and failure. And unlike social media, decision-makers’ “likes” may not be easily and quickly discerned. Future successful leaders will need to bridge the gap between their organizations’ visions and employee technology-driven expectations.
